Muswell Hill Garden
Our garden at Muswell hill, London, is currently under construction, as part of a major refurbishment of the property, it is due to be complete in Spring 2020.
This garden had several interesting characteristics, which set the design parameters from an early stage. It’s length and the need to link the house with a new garden studio, were the key drivers of the design. We wanted to break up the space by using vertical forms and guide views into the garden from each building.
The garden is designed over two levels, the higher forming the majority and the lower space forming an intimate setting adjacent to the garden studio.
This space was designed to be a quiet place for thought and contemplation, a calm setting in which to work or relax. A large pool of water has a continued trickle of water running down from lush naturalistic planting, with the beautiful sculptural form of an flowering ornamental tree arching over creating beautiful reflections of green and vibrant red in the autumn.
Our client was keen to include a rock garden in the brief, so we developed a contemporary version, integrating beautiful craggy limestone pieces into the planting with smooth surfaces on some to create an enchanting path through the plants.
Areas of seating closer to the house benefit from views though the characterful multistem trees across the lawn which is bordered by a wide bed containing a careful mix of evergreen shrubs and perennials. Specially selected topiary on the areas of hard surface break up the built forms by bringing in gentle green relief, and a graduation from the built to the garden and back again.
